Yesterday’s post was about the benefits of exercise for older adults. Today, we are going to talk about some unconventional activities that you can do for exercise. This idea was sparked when I read that the American Heart Association includes gardening in their examples of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, which is something a lot of older adults do as a hobby. The goal here is to illustrate that you should take joy in your physical activity. You’re going to be more likely to actually do it if you enjoy it, and doing it is the important part.
Dancing
Dancing is a great workout, and it is fun and enjoyable. The other reason why it is a great option for older adults is that depending on your mobility it doesn’t really have an age limit. And like yoga, depending on the style you may be able to make modifications to support any limitations you may have. Especially if you are doing a form of social or ballroom dance. While you can take classes, a lot of dance studios also offer free nights for the community. And it is a great way to make friends!
Gardening
Gardening is aerobic exercise! Not only does it involve aerobics, but it also involves lifting and it is an art form. It expresses creativity and is also exercise. You can even grow your own fruits and vegetables. It also is something that you have to do continuously in order to see improvement in your garden.
Look into Your Communities for Classes
You can find classes in your community. A great place to go is the YMCA, but local community centers are also a great place to look. Of course there are boutique studios, but they may be more expensive.
