I’ve talked before about skin care for older adults. As you age, your skin changes and mature skin has different needs. It also may behave slightly differently. So, you may find your skin suddenly reacts negatively to products you’ve always used. Here are some things you can do.

Someone squeezes sunscreen from an orange tube into their hand.

Talk to a Dermatologist

You may want to talk to a dermatologist if you are noticing skin changes or if you’re noticing new reactions to products. They may be able to help give you some advice in products that will be good for mature skin. The reason why I say to tell them about any new reactions is that we can develop skin allergies as we age. They may be able to refer you to an allergist for evaluation.

Look for Hydration

You’re going to want to prioritize hydrating your skin as you get older, as mature skin can be prone to dryness. So if you wear makeup, look for hydrating foundations. Regardless of whether or not you wear makeup, you may consider boosting your moisturizer game. You may need a heavier daytime moisturizer than you’re used to using.

Be Careful With Fragrance

To be clear, I’m not talking about perfume. I’m talking about fragranced skin care. Fragrance can be a sensitizing agent in skin care, so some people may find that over time their skin reacts negatively to it. It’s not a hard and fast rule but it is something to look out for. If you notice a reaction, talk to a dermatologist.

And of course, drink your water and wear your sunscreen!
