Today for Resolution January we are going to cover ways to stick to your resolutions! Check out last week’s post about how to create a sustainable resolution. Today’s entry will be all about how people can stick to their resolutions after they’ve made good, sustainable resolutions.
Have an Accountability Partner
Do your resolution with a buddy! This works best for certain types of resolutions, like exercise-based goals. An example of one of those is for the resolution of, “I will walk three times a week,” you have your friend walk with you. Or with walking, if you have a dog that you have to walk anyways, your dog can be your accountability buddy (obviously you walk your dog more than three times a week). Your buddy needs to be an external force who will be expecting you to follow through.
Jot it Down
Keep track of your progress in a tangible way. For a goal that you do daily, you could mark a check on a calendar for every day that you completed your goal. If it’s a measurable goal like you want to reapply sunscreen x amount of times or eat x number of fruits and vegetables a day, you can write that down on the calendar, too, or you make a table for that in a journal. If you are someone who journals, you can track it there. Having a tangible way to remind yourself of your progress will help you stick to your goals.
Don’t Despair if You Miss a Day
If you miss a day or a small goal, try to start anew the next day and do the best you can. A lot of times people make unsustainable resolutions and then give up when they skip a day. If your goal is to exercise three times a week for an hour a day, and you haven’t been able to work out all week but on Sunday you know you have an hour to work out, do it. Work out for that hour and then try to meet your goal the next week. If you are consistently missing that goal, maybe that’s an indicator that you need to adjust your goal.
