Last week we gave you some information about being safe when you venture out in snowy and icy weather. We want to share some thoughts on how you can make sure your home, or that of a loved one, is a safe environment.
· Make sure stairs are kept clear of clutter and that the handrail is not loose
· Always wipe up spills on solid surface floors
· Make sure small rugs or mats are removed if possible. If they are needed, be sure they are tacked or taped down to prevent them from slipping underfoot
· Mount grab bars in the bathroom
· Make sure there are grip strips in the tub
· Use nightlights in halls, bedroom, and bathrooms
· Keep high traffic areas clear of cords, plants, boxes, etc.
· Make sure exterior lights illuminate the sidewalk and stairs into the home
· Always keep leaves, snow and ice cleared off the walkway and stairs
It is always a good idea to look at your surroundings at home and assess the condition. If you need help moving furniture to open pathways ask for it! If the lightbulb is burned out at the top of the stairs, ask for help changing it!
